For Kunstkantine Jhonie van Boeijen is building The Supermarket. An installation where products from all over the world stand side by side. Chips, candy and packaging from different cultures brought together in one shared space.

Inspired by the globalization of Dutch stores and viral food trends, Jhonie explores what products can tell us about culture, design and sustainability. How consumer goods reflect identity, habits and the time we live in.

This supermarket brings together works from past, present and future projects. Objects once kept in storage are now placed on display, not to be consumed, but to be observed.

Alaska Hummel’s work is rooted in the belief that creativity should be cherished, celebrated, and shared. Not placed on a pedestal, but brought to the table.

Rather than making grand statements, Alaska focuses on emotions that are often overlooked: comfort, familiarity, and small everyday joys. The works created for the canteen highlight the mundane, the mess, the crumbs, the half-empty glasses.

They serve as a visual reminder of what lives in simple moments: spending time together, sharing a meal or a drink, and allowing things to be a little imperfect.

Dagmar Stap embroiders candy wrappers, receipts and packaging that would normally end up in the trash within five minutes.

She’s fascinated by consumption, graphic design, and objects that were never meant to last. It’s all about the Canteen takes place in the canteen, the ultimate space of quick decisions and low thresholds.

If we buy snacks here without thinking, why not art? You can pay. You can hesitate. You’ll get art anyway. Art as an impulse purchase.

Sebastiaan Rodenhuis is a photographer from Groningen who specializes in documentary photography. He focuses on both portraits and still lifes, all in a melancholic, understated visual language.

For the expo It’s all about the Canteen, we went exploring for canteens in and around Groningen.

For this particular series, he returned to his childhood: the soccer canteen of Be Quick 1887 in Haren, Groningen. A place soaked in nostalgia, where time sometimes seems to stand still. A place that runs on volunteers, with Loed, portrayed here, as living proof of that quiet dedication.

Sanne Boswijk approaches her artistic practice as a visual thought experiment. In her studio, art becomes a space where both sensible and absurd ideas are tested through image, with transparency and light as recurring elements.

Working from an ever growing archive of self made works and found artefacts, Sanne builds installations using whatever is at hand. Paint on glass, LED light, insulation tape, stucco runner, digitally manipulated experimental photography and this time also gelatine.

Insight is never the only goal. Humor plays an equal role. A provocation with a wink, but made beautiful.

For It’s All About the Canteen, this results in a contemporary still life. Bread, traditionally linked to calm and balance, reappears as supermarket bread, combined with contemporary ceramics and camping gear, backlit with LED light.

For the expo 𝘐𝘵’𝘴 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘦𝘯, we went exploring for canteens in and around Groningen.

Photographer Hobbe Hollands captured the Oosterpark Denksportcentrum. A place where people come together for coffee, legendary meatballs and spontaneous encounters. You’ll find his photographs throughout the entire canteen.

And beyond these walls? You’ll spot Hobbe all over the city, always observing, always capturing and always up for a chat.
